Vy Group (formerly Norges Statsbaner) is the state railway company in Norway. Together with its subsidiaries, it operates most of the passenger rail transport in Norway. In addition to Vy, SJ Nord and Go-Ahead Nordic also operate services in Norway.

Important Information

In Norway, railway services are awarded in several lots by the Ministry of Transport and Communications through tendering procedures. Unlike for most other FIP members, FIP Discounts are recognized not only by Vy, but also by SJ Nord and Go-Ahead Nordic. The FIP Coupon “Vy Group” is also valid on these railway companies.1

Summary

  • FIP 50 Tickets and FIP Coupons are accepted by Vy, SJ Nord and Go-Ahead Nordic.
  • Some cross-border connections and certain routes are excluded from FIP Discounts.

Fjerntog (F)

Long-distance trains on the country’s main lines with café. Some trains operate as night trains with seat, couchette and sleeping cars. In the journey planner on Entur, the night trains are marked with a crescent moon .

Night train: stay, shower and breakfast

The railway companies cooperate with local hotels. With a ticket for the night train, you can spend the time until departure in the hotel lobby. After the train arrives, breakfast and/or a shower can be booked at the hotel at a good price-performance ratio.

Flytoget is the airport express between Oslo Airport and Oslo S. FIP Discounts cannot be used here.

Vy express / Vy flybussen
FIP not accepted

Vy operates a network of long-distance bus routes, which cannot be used with FIP.2

Class Categories

The classes on the trains differ depending on the operator and train category.

Vy:

  • Standard (Lavpris / Flex): Comparable to 2nd class.
  • Pluss (Plus): Comparable to 1st class. Complimentary coffee and tea are offered.
  • Kupé (Compartment): Six-seat compartment. Only the entire compartment can be booked, not individual seats. Only available on day trains.
  • PlussNatt (PlusNight): Reclining seat that can be laid completely flat. Only available on night trains.
  • Hvilekupé (Rest): Couchette compartment with 6 berths. Only the entire compartment can be booked, not individual berths. Only available on night trains.
  • Sovekupé (Sleeper): Sleeping compartment with 2 beds. Only available on night trains.

SJ Nord:

  • Premium: Comparable to 1st class. Complimentary cold and hot drinks are offered. Not available on night trains.
  • Premium Pluss (Premium Plus): Reclining seat, complimentary cold and hot drinks, fruit and chocolate.
  • Sovekupé (Sleeper): Sleeping compartment with two beds and a washbasin, with toilets in the corridor.

  • Sove (Sleeper): Sleeping compartment with 2 beds. Only available on night trains.

Trains in categories RE, R and L usually have only Standard class.

With a 2nd class FIP Card / FIP Coupon, journeys in 1st class can be booked for a supplement.

FIP Tickets and reservations cannot be booked as self-service, but can be obtained via chat, telephone hotline or at the station ticket offices.

For reservations in seat, couchette or sleeper cars, a reservation fee must be paid regardless of the carriage class.

At the following five railway stations in Norway, there is a ticket office where FIP 50 Tickets and reservations can be purchased:

  • Bergen
  • Oslo Airport (Gardermoen Station)
  • Oslo Central (Oslo S)

DB Ticket Office

Deutsche Bahn ticket offices are called DB Reisezentrum and are located in many larger stations throughout Germany.

FIP 50 Tickets

At DB ticket offices, FIP 50 Tickets can be purchased for journeys within Germany and to many European countries.

It is also possible to issue FIP 50 Tickets where only the section outside Germany is charged, and an additional ticket is required for the German section. This is especially important for DB employees, as FIP 50 Tickets are not valid in their home country.

Reservations

The reservation price is calculated per journey. This means that for connections with transfers, you only need to pay once for multiple trains.

Reservations can be made not only for Germany but also for a large number of trains throughout Europe.

FIP Discounts cannot be purchased from ticket machines.

On the Train

FIP Discounts cannot be purchased on the train.

Discounts

On public fares, children up to 6 years travel free of charge, children up to 18 years receive a discount on the adult fare. From the age of 18, the regular adult fare applies.1

Break of journey

A break of journey is not permitted.1

Cross-border journeys

FIP Discounts cannot be used on the following cross-border journeys2:

  • Halden – Gothenburg (RE20 is operated on this section by Vy Tåg Sverige)
  • Oslo S – Kongsvinger – Charlottenberg – Stockholm (operated by SJ Sverige, therefore not valid on the entire route)
  • Oslo S – Karlstad – Stockholm (operated by SJ Sverige, therefore not valid on the entire route)
  • Narvik – Luleå (operated by SJ Sverige)

Only on the journey from Trondheim to Storlien is FIP recognized on the entire route.3

Journeys in the fare areas of Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger

FIP Coupons are valid in the train categories Regiontog and Lokaltog in the fare area of Oslo.1

FIP 50 is not valid in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim or Stavanger if the journey begins and ends within the fare areas.2

Personal Tip

It is possible to buy FIP 50 Tickets for journeys that partly run within these fare areas, as long as the journey does not take place entirely within one of these fare areas.2

Oslo Airport

  • FIP Discounts can be used on the route between Oslo Airport, Oslo and Drammen only on trains of Vy, SJ Nord and Go-Ahead Nordic (lines R10, R11, R12). More information can be found on the Vy website about airport transfers.
  • Officially, the journey may not end in the fare zone of Oslo (Ruter), see Journeys in the fare areas of Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger.
  • FIP cannot be used on Flytoget Airport Express trains.
  • The long-distance trains from Trondheim to Oslo Airport (line F6) stop at the airport only for passengers alighting, which is why FIP is excluded here.

Flåm Railway

The Flåm Railway between Myrdal and Flåm is operated by Vy, but is excluded from FIP Discounts.2

Ofoten Line

The Ofoten Line between Narvik and Bjørnfjell is excluded from FIP Discounts.2
